Since its inception in 1999, Richard Mille has brought into the watch industry a winning attitude. Aiming for ultra complexity and a close synergy with the world of high performance racing machines, timepieces by this Switzerland-based watchmaker are known as “the secret billionaire’s handshake”. Therein, the latest masterpiece of RM 056 Tourbillon Chronograph Sapphire – Felipe Massa which was produced in 2015 is considered as one of the watches taking Richard Mille’s prices to a new peak, ranged between US $1,700,000 and US $2,000,000.
This edition was made for the 10-year anniversary of collaboration between Richard Mille and car racer Felipe Massa with just 10 pieces available globally. Renowned by experts for its uncompromising technicality, at the very core of the RM056 tourbillion caliber is a synthesis of the brand’s most exciting innovations.
Comprised of more than 500 individual components, the grade-five titanium RMCC1 caliber plays host to one of horology’s most exquisite complications: a split-seconds chronograph. This tourbillion movement also boasts indicators for the power reserve and torque, and a function selector.
As meticulous in their craft as Felipe Massa in his own sphere, the engineers at Richard Mille have optimized the movement, fine-tuning its time-keeping precision and improving the operation of its split-seconds by reducing friction, and ensuring the long-term reliability of the caliber.
Although this is not the first time Richard Mille has created by itself or in cooperation with Felipe Massa a watch with sapphire crystal case, this ultra-ritzi limited edition of RM056 still inspires clients in the top-notch segment. It should be mentioned that sapphire crystal is primarily used in luxury watches as the material for the “crystal” over the dial because it can be grown, transparent, milled, and is very hard.
However, the process used to produce crystal in sapphire that fit over watch faces is different from the processes used to precision-cut sapphire in other shapes for things such as watch cases. Additionally, Richard Mille claims that it takes 430 hours of work to mill each sapphire crystal case and another 350 hours to polish the major pieces.
And that’s part of manufacturing process of the complicated edition. Under magnification, one can begin to understand why Richard Mille’s “high performance machines for the wrist” are priced as such.
Particularly in Vietnam, this well-known watchmaker has announced its debut with the opening a boutique located at Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi.
